Tamika Green, Associate Art Director for Emerge Magazine asked me to shoot an environmental portrait of Jewell Parker Rhodes for a story written by Eisa Nefertari Ulen about her novel "Magic City" that she had just published.

I'd wanted to shoot at this location for quite a while, as I'd walked through the ASU campus and been on several photo shoots at ASU.

When they told me the name of the book was "Magic City" I knew this would be the perfect location for this shot. Once I confirmed with Jewell that the location was a go, I scouted to figure out the angle, best time of day for the shot, and what lighting I would need to do.

Strobist info / Lighting: Dynalites
Main light: Medium Chimera, camera left.
(7) additional Dynalite heads with 10" reflectors

Hasselblad 50mm lens with an 81B filter
Exposure: 1/250 sec @ f/16
Film: Fuji RDP 100
Photoshop: almost none.
Location: Arizona State University,
Nelson Fine Arts Center, Tempe, AZ
Temperature: 110 degrees
Photo assistant: Lyle Moultrie

The location was designed by the amazing architect Antoine Predock, and as been used as backgrounds in several advertisements, and I believe a Honda or Toyota car was photographed here and the ad ran across a 2-page spread in several national magazines, including Time Magazine.
