I was told that this was the first cover of Aviation Week that had a person on the cover, so everyone was really nervous about the outcome of the shot. I scouted for a location at Allied Signal in Phoenix, and they showed me a lot of areas at the facility, but when I saw this test cell where they test jet engines, I said "that's it, that's the background".

One of the Allied Signal public relations sugggested we shoot him in an open hanger door with a plane and blue sky in the background, I said "...they all have a plane with blue sky on the cover... let's do something different." After the shoot the PR guy came up to me and said, "you were right" :-)
